What Are the Redskins Thinking?

What?

What should the Redskins do?  Let's see here you have one of the worst rush defense's in the league.  You have a running back that has seen little to no NFL action until this year.  You've had the Haynesworth fiasco all year long.  So the natural thing to do is bench McNabb and start Grossman.  What?  You have got to be kidding me.  Seriously?  McNabb has been almost the only bright spot for you this year Shanahan.  If you thought the ship was sinking before, Grossman will be the iceberg that sinks the Redskins Titanic.  This may be the most boneheaded move of the NFL this season.  I know they aren't gonna make the playoffs but trust me you cant blame McNabb for that.  Go ahead ask Buffalo, Carolina, Minnesota or even Detroit if they would start McNabb.  I promise you this move is going to bite Shanahan in the rear.  No disrespect to Grossman but the Skins will lose by 2 if not 3 touchdowns and Grossman throws at least 2 picks and possibly loses a fumble.

Cliff Lee, The Metrodome, and The Knicks

Cliff Lee

First of all i need to talk about the Cliff Lee signing for just a second.  I APPLAUD Cliff Lee for going somewhere that makes him happy.  If you look at it the Yanks got what they had coming to them.  During the playoff series against the Rangers this year the yankee fans cussed and poured beer on his wife.  REALLY?  Now you expect him to come to the Bronx and win you a world title?  Get over yourself Cashman!  Cliff knew that the extra money on the table wasn't worth going to a city that disrespected his family, and you can not tell me that the incident with his wife didn't factor into his decision.  Good for him!  I mean seriously once you get 100 million dollar deal how much more do you need?  Shortly after landing in Philadelphia Lee stated that "There are alot more pros than cons here.  My family loves it here."  Do you hear that NY?  His family loves it there.  Meaning you dropped the ball when you treated his wife like a nobody.  Finally some justice in Major League Baseball!

The Metrodome

Minnesota you had better get a grip on a bad situation.  I hope for the purple people eater fans that the Vikes can get this Metrodome situation figured out because i fear the results could be bad.  After building that beautiful outdoor facility for the Twins, I dont think that the city will build a new stadium for the Vikings.  In turn you had better believe there is someone waiting in the wings to buy this team and move them to LA with a quickness that would make Barry Sanders look slow.  One week you are in Detroit playing a game on an interdivisional teams field and the next week you have to play at the University of Minnesota's new field where they have to remove tons of snow to play a game in negative degree wind chills.  I dont care who the fans are they are not going to support this for a long period of time.  Whats to say the roof wont collapse again?  So you have a team that is in the middle of a collapse, and the roof is collapsing on your field.  Get it together Minnesota.

The Knicks

The Knicks are back baby!  Ive never been this biggest Knick fan but this team looks interesting and fun.  Amare Stoudemire has emerged as the leader of this team, and with his contract he should coach the team too.  Stoudemire has been a good pick up no doubt, but you must look a little bit deeper to see the Knicks real source of success.  In my opinion Raymond Felton has been the catalyst for the Knicks this year.  Yes Amare is getting the numbers but Felton is getting him the ball.  For the first time in a long time the Knicks/Celtics game last night was fun to watch.  It felt like a playoff game again.  Its fun to see MSG alive again.  Spike Lee running around yelling at Paul Pierce, and Nate Robinson doing a face plant.  Wait. What?  Yes he sure did!  In the midst of his celebration of Pierce's last second heroics, Robinson with hops like David Thompson just in a way shorter frame, appeared to jump over Paul Pierce and face plant in the middle of the floor.  This was hilarious!!!  You know if you get hurt doing something like this you cant just lay there!  Even if you broke your orbital you have to get up like nothing happened.  Calm down a bit Nate its only the middle of December.  So kudos to the Knicks for a good run so far.  If healthy they are gonna be tough in the playoffs this year.  Yep im predicting the Knicks are in the playoffs.

MLB Hotstove Signings

Baseball's Big Signings

I know i said i was going to write about basketball at the end of this week, but i just cant help writing about all the happenings in baseball right now.  All of the signings and trades in the past week have got me longing for spring training.  So here is what i think about who is moving towards improvement and who is making a slide downward.
First of all, the Boston Red Sox have went from the team in the AL East that was constantly looking slightly up to the NY Yankees to equals with the pinstrippers.  With the signing of Gonzalez and Crawford i think that the Red Sox have become a favorite to win the AL East.  The lineup should go a little something like this if you are wondering 1st Ellsbury, 2nd Pedroia, 3rd Youkilis, 4th Crawford, 5th Gonzalez, 6th Ortiz, 7th Drew, 8th Saltalamacchia, 9th Scutaro.  This lineup is LOADED.  I can not put into words just how excited i am to see the Yankees and Sox battle it out in the AL East this year.
Conversely, the Tampa Bay Rays are going in the opposite direction.  I love Joe Madden's managerial skills, but the blow that hes been dealt to his line up is going to be tough to recover from. The loss of Crawford and Pena could cause Dick Vitale to lose the rest of his hair watching his beloved Rays play next season.  Look for a 3rd place finish out of the Rays in the East next year.
The South Side Sox had another big signing this week.  Paul Konerko is back in a White Sox uniform and this was a smart move.  Last year Konerko hit 39 homeruns, and batted .312 with 111 RBI.  He combined with the Adam Dunn signing makes the White Sox a big player in the AL Central.  On the bad side of things the White Sox did lose a key piece of their bullpen with JJ Putz going to the Diamondbacks, last season Putz had a 2.83 ERA and had 65 strikeouts in 54 innings pitched.
On the other side of Chicago, the Cubbies signed Carlos Pena, this was a key pick-up with loss of Derek Lee last year to Atlanta during the stretch run.  I must say the Cubs need PITCHING,  without it they will again be a disappointment in the highly competitive NL Central.
Here are some other signings
Rockies sign Ty Wiggington
Braves sign George Sherrill
Mariners sign Miguel Olivo
Brewers signed Shaun Marcum
Orioles signed JJ Hardy
This has been an active offseason and its been fun to watch.  I cant wait to see what else happens

The Past Weeks Top Sports Issues

NFL

The NFL is now in the "meat and potatoes" part of the schedule.  During this time of the season the games seem to have more of an edge because of playoff implications and players either step up or step aside and let the real contenders get it done.  There was some big games on the slate this weekend.  Falcons vs. Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore, and the Monday night match up New England vs. NY (Jets), these were my top 3 games this weekend.  The Falcons seem to be the best team in the NFC at the moment.  This team has moxy.  The 2011 Falcons have the innate ability to get the job done at the end of games.  The past two weeks have been amazing to watch.  The last minute heroics against the Packers and then coming back in the 4th against the Bucs this week proves that this team has an innate ability to win games.
The best game of the week in my humble opinion was Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore.  Recently this rivalry has been nothing short of a defensive slug fest.  This one was much of the same.  Big Ben started the game in a special shoe because of a foot issue, and on the first drive got his nose broke on a sack by Ngata.  Let me say something here, you can say what you want about Roethlisberger, but the man handled his business Sunday night.  He persevered and stood in the pocket with a blue-collar attitude that has made the Steelers legendary over the years.  In other news from this game, Terrell Suggs is a complete ANIMAL.  For a long time this team has been anchored by Ray Lewis, i mean when you thought about the Ravens defense, you thought about Ray Lewis.  The trend is changing in Baltimore.  Suggs is poised to take over the team and continue the hard hitting ways of the Ravens for years to come.  Pittsburgh in the end made two more plays than Baltimore did and this thriller went to the Steelers.
I really don't even have to comment about the Monday night game do i?  The Patriots and Tom Brady are without question the BEST team in the league right now and they proved it.  The Jets really laid an egg in this game.  They got beat in every facet of the game last night and it was embarrassing.  The Patriots punter was even clearly better.  This was terrible to watch.
Finally Albert Haynesworth.  Ah Albert!  This guy maybe the worst thing that has ever happened to football.  OK i understand you don't like your coach or coaching staff, but Albert, C'MON.  This guy is absolutely worthless.  He wouldn't talk to Shanahan at all, he wouldn't play on first or second down nickel packages.  He wouldn't play on base packages.  He has expressed his distaste with the 3-4 all year long, he whines, he pouts, hes a liability to the whole league.  Do us all a favor Albert, charter a jet and fly to Minnesota, pick up Brett Favre, and both of you fly to Brett's secluded ranch in Mississippi and never make a sound that the media can hear again so long as you both shall live.  Kudos to the Washington coaching staff for suspending this MORON!

MLB

The winter meetings are getting down right HOT!  Huge signings this year include Adrian Gonzalez going to the Red Sox, the Yankees re-sign Jeter, the Nationals sign Jason Werth, and Victor Martinez is now a Detroit Tiger.  My big winners in all of this is the Red Sox and the Tigers.  I think that signing Gonzalez opens up many options for the Red Sox.  This addition solidifies the Red Sox infield, pending a healthy Pedroia and Youkilis next year and puts alot more pop in their line-up.  This move could be followed up by a Carl Crawford signing, which in my opinion would make the Red Sox the front-runner in the AL East in my opinion.  My overall big winner in the off season so far is the Tigers.  The Tigers had 2 major issues from last year and they addressed them both with one signing.  Its no secret that the catchers in Detroit last year were awful.  Avila and Laird were defensively mediocre, but provided virtually no offense all year.  By signing Martinez the Tigers addressed both their need for a solid catcher and put a bat in their line-up to deflect some of the pressure off of Miguel Cabrera.  I like the Tigers moving into 2011, i think they need to pick up maybe a number 2 or 3 pitcher and if they can do that i really believe they can be competitive in the Central next year.  Although I'm not a Yankee fan, I must say I'm glad that they re-signed Jeter.  I don't think it would be good for anyone if he finishes his career with another team. Jeter is a Yankee.  The same as Ryne Sandberg will always be a Cub, and Cal Ripken will always be an Oriole.
My loser in the off season so far is the Nationals.  I DO NOT like this move!!  The deal with Werth is too much money and too many years in my opinion.  I think that next year the Nationals will finish the year with best team in the NL East (on paper).  By that i mean that we already know that Strasburg and Werth are injury prone.  I say the Braves win the NL East next year.  The addition of Uggla at second and Derek Lee at first makes this line-up pretty strong.

Let me know what you think!

I will be posting a basketball edition on Thursdays so look for that this Thursday in the afternoon!
