Rory and Life Outside of Sports.....

Theres a couple of sports issues i will touch on in this post, but mainly this post will be my feelings on life at this moment.  Let me go ahead and say that you Rory McIlroy was impressive at Congressional last weekend.  Very nicely done.  Now let me also go ahead and say that you are a long way from being Tiger.  Thats where i leave it and will not touch it again.  Congressional looked amazing.  To a turfgrass student it was impressive to see.  It didn't play like a US Open course should have but it was aesthetically pleasing.  I will also say i LOVE interleague play, but i do not love the disadvantage that away teams are put in with the DH rule.  I agree with Leyland.  Either make it all DH or make pitchers hit, one or the other, but have a uniform rule for the whole league to make interleague play even better than it already is for everyone involved PLEASE.
I will make this section short.  I don't want to be on a soapbox for a long time preaching at all of you.  Here lately it has become apparent to me that i have been far to complacent with my life.  I haven't been the humanitarian i desire to be, and i feel like most days i have been quite neutral in life.  So I have decided that each day i am going to try to do something positive for someone or something if i can.  I really believe that if more people decided to make a difference in some little way everyday that of course the whole world will become a more positive and happy place to live in!  Thanks for reading this sappy stuff i promise ill write about sports only the next post.  If you feel like i do about being positive in life let me hear about it!!! God Bless

Tim Wakefield; American Greatness

Ok so i don't have a lot to talk about today.  I was thinking i would talk about Tim Wakefield and why i like the guy so much.  Is it because hes plays for the Sox?  Is it because of his longevity? I think that these two reasons probably factor into it alot, but the reason i really like him is that you can look at the man and he just screams BASEBALL.
I had the great pleasure of weeks ago at Comerica and we had good seats. I like to take everything in at the ballpark so naturally i watched Tim during his pregame warm-up.This just solidified why i love watching this guy so much.  I mean just look at him hes been with Boston for 19 years.  He takes a pitch that tops out somewhere around the mid 60's and makes it unhittable at times.  Hes the very definition of Boston and the way they play.  No he doesn't win every game, as a matter of fact he lost last night to the Rays, but the guy just has a certain Americana feel to him that makes him one of my favorite players in the game.  I mean he looks like he could go out and pitch at Yankee stadium in a pressure packed game on a Saturday night, then go buy a six pack of Budweiser and go trout fishing with you the next Sunday afternoon.  I bet he would even use the stream as his cooler, you know just like the Busch beer commercials... He's always got a big plug of tobacco in (by the way i do not condone tobacco or alcohol use to anyone) but this cat is definitely old school and it is his most endearing quality to me.  Everyone has their favorite players and Wakefield is one of the tops on my list.  Some of the tops on my list are Wakefield, Verlander, Josh Hamilton, Pedroia, Youkilis, Michael Young, and Jeter is on this list because i respect his greatness (not because i like the Yanks).  Give me an old school feeling player and ill watch them any day of the week.

Please if you live in the Lansing area go give blood at Mad Dogs blood drive on Monday June 20th... its a good cause and people need your help.  Listen to him and Josh every weekday morning on 730 the game 6 to 9.  God Bless you all....

Major League Stadiums.... continued... sort of

Ok, so the other day i talked about Peter Gammons and his derogatory remarks about Wrigley Field.  This blog is going to be about my last two years and the baseball stadiums i have seen thus far.  I will comment on each stadium and what i liked about each one and what i disliked about each one and rank them sort of. So heres what i've got so far and ill mix in some funny stories.
Last year i came up with what i think was one of my most brilliant ideas ever.  I started an annual baseball trip.  The first year was small and i don't know whether my best friend ryan, or my wonderful family realized it or not but it was a test run for future trips and it worked out well.  So year one was actually two seperate trips one with my family and one with my best friend in this world Ryan Salley en route to North Carolina for a week of seeing my family and friends.
The first trip we took was a short one but it started with one in Detroit with the Tigers playing the Royals this game was decent and a good starter game.  The next 2 days would be spent on the North Side of Chicago at Wrigley and included 2 games, one versus the brew crew, and the next day playing the Astros.  I had been to Comerica before this so i knew what to expect and i must say Detroit you have a JEWEL of a ballpark.  I love games at Comerica.  There is an undeniable charm about the place.  You have a beautiful scoreboard.  Good overpriced food.  Finally, what i really love about the place is all of the history you find all over the place.  The statues in left field are awesome and the kiosks surround the park are really fun to read and check out.  i highly recommend it.
Let me talk about Wrigley now.  I LOVE WRIGLEY FIELD.  Its Wrigley.  Its not just Wrigley its the Wrigley experience.  I don't think its a dump like Peter Gammons does at all.  Its a piece of American history.  Its the place i used to project myself too when i was small and would close my eyes and listen to Harry Caray call games on WGN.  It honestly took all of my emotions as a man and balled them up threw them away and made me feel like a child again.  Its baseball passion.  People aren't just Cubs fans they are family.  You feel it.  It all makes sense when you are in the middle of it.  Win.  Lose.  They drink and sing and boo and cheer and they do it all in unison.  It makes me smile thinking of it.  Please do yourself a favor and go see it.  If you go please call or message me and know that if i can get a way to go with you i will do it.
Later last year Ryano and i went to Cincinnati on the way back to NC.  I like the Great American Ballpark.  I think its a nice stadium.  I don't however believe that they use all of their potential in this ballpark.  The river is a beautiful back drop to the place.  I love the touch of the riverboat in center.... if only you could get on the thing to watch the game?  Why would you put a great piece in the ballpark and NOT make it accessible to people who wanna buy a beer and a dog and stand there for a couple of innings.  You missed the mark here Cincy... again i say i like the stadium but like in Comerica where you have the Jungle under the Pepsi Porch where you can watch the game from a bird's eye view or the batters eye in Wrigley where you can stand and have an Old Style, you need to have a place like that in your ballpark Cincy.  They have one tiny little deck in left field thats not very big for you to stand on and you can't see all of right field from it.  The coolest part of this day was seeing Willie Mays being honored for his contributions to the Civil Rights movement.  I have pictures of Willie and i thought that was awesome he was honored.  Also, for what its worth, the game was very exciting and ended in a relay play at the plate to throw out the tying run.  Fun game, slightly disappointing ballpark for me.
There are two other ballparks im gonna talk about now.  One is Turner Field in Atlanta, I love Turner field.  Its great.  It has the Chophouse where you can get a steak and a beer and stand on the deck and watch the game... very nice.  It has the coca cola deck where kids can run the bases and it also has alot of history around the place to look at... Fun park to see i recommend it.
Now let me talk about Miller Park.  Me, Adam, Ryan, and Scotty D all went to Miller Park last month and it was absolutely INCREDIBLE.  It's not Wrigley which is tops for me but let me tell you it is well worth your time to see this unbelievable modern marvel.  It honestly is overwhelming.  The roof is crazy, the scoreboard blows anything ive ever seen out of the water, and there is good food, beer, whatever you can think of.  If you love baseall you owe it to yourself to go see this place.  I would go back next weekend if someone had tickets... If you have any questions about it all just ask me... and if you want in on the next baseball trip let me know...
P.S.   next month ill be going to Cleveland to see Progressive Field and the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame... i will write a post on that as well.... ENJOY!!!

Peter Gammons and what i dislike about going to major league games...

Alright so last night i went to my fifth Tiger game of the year already.  The place was packed and i must say that it was nice to see all of the support for a team that has been playing as well as anyone in the bigs besides the torrid Red Sox.  I really have a passion for going to major league baseball games.  There is something that's undeniably American about it and i feel a sense of pride that my country invented this great game.  So in honor of the American way I'm gonna do what any normal American would do in this situation and tell you what i absolutely LOATHE about going to major league games.
Let me set the scene before i go too in depth about this.  As we are driving into Detroit, i notice an abnormally large amount of traffic headed into the war zone we used to call a city.  I found it strange but didn't give it a whole lot of thought until i saw a massive amount of adolescent teenage girls headed towards the stadium.  Still not knowing whats going on and why all the parking lots were virtually filled with an hour and a half until first pitch i made my way into Comerica Park.  By the way, the end of this particular post will have something to do with ballparks. So read all of this.  We get into the stadium and i pick up my customary pack of the fresh roasted almonds i love so much and a pop and make my way to my seat.  It was at my seat that i encountered the first thing i dislike about major league games.  The 25 year old girl that decided to celebrate her birthday party at the ballpark with 20 plus of her best girlfriends and her steroid raging boyfriend.  It was through Sarah and her posse that i found out Taylor Swift was playing at Ford Field last night.  GREAT!  Getting back to Sarah and her peeps... I'm not sure but I'm almost certain that these people did NOT WATCH ONE PITCH of the game... they talked about shopping and "like going to the MGM afterwards to get their drink on." Shut up and watch the game please.  I know when Johnny Peralta hit the laser to the left field bullpen that NONE of them stood up and one even asked "what just happened?"  I realize these people paid for their seat just as i did, but if you're not going to pay attention to the game then find something else to do for your birthday for crying out loud.
Next i will touch on the other steroid raging guys drinking the daiquiri's instead of a Beer then decide its OK to dance to the JLo song in the 6th inning after hes had 2 of the previous mentioned daiquiri's.  Hey moron sit down you look like an idiot.  Its not attractive and any self respecting woman thinks you are a chooch.  Look I'm not going to lie to you... I've had to many beers at a baseball game and here's a news flash i didn't get up and dance to JLo song in the middle of the aisle.  The topper for these guys is that there is always one of his "boys" who say to him sit down Jim, then Jim proceeds to cuss at the top of his lungs to his friend in a "loving fashion."  Again I'm going to my bag and sprinkle some you are a tool dust all over you moron's.  This isn't a bar.  The little kid sitting two seats behind you with his grandfather doesn't need to hear F*** YOU at the top of your lungs repeatedly.  Take into account that there are 44,000 other people here and at least 30,000 of them (if not more) do not want to watch you lose yourself in 3 daiquiri's and act a fool.
Finally, and I'll make this one brief.  To the people that bring the signs that have the names of that particular teams TV broadcasters on it that read "Mario and Rod I love you."  Just stop!  You look like a moron in person and on TV if they so choose to put you on air.  WATCH THE GAME!
To end this post I'm going to touch on Peter Gammons calling Wrigley Field a "dump".  Pete i normally love your commentary.  You are great sports caster and a wonderful baseball man that i respect.  What are you thinking?"  Everyone that goes through the turnstiles at Wrigley, and for that matter Fenway, know that the place is old and dilapidated... THAT'S WHAT THEY LOVE ABOUT IT.   You are a Red Sox guy Pete.  How can you say that about one of the crown jewels of America's favorite pastime?  Sometimes as everyone's momma says "If you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all."  I respect your opinion Pete but keep it to yourself if its going to down the history of the game i love so much...

Why Lebron Will Never Compare to Jordan

Over the last couple of years i can't count the number of times I've heard Lebron James is a physical specimen, and with all due respect i agree Lebron is an amazing athlete.  Everyone that knows me knows that my ties to the UNC basketball program go deep.  I want to stress that this post has absolutely nothing to do with this.  When i step back and look at Jordan and Lebron there are a couple of glaring differences in their games that make me say Lebron cant compare to M.J. As a matter of fact i will give you three different reasons that make me realize that Lebron isn't even the second best player in this years Finals.
First of all, the talent surrounding Jordan was not even close to the players that the Heat have put around Lebron.  Jordan had the likes of Kukoc, Longley, Cartwright, and who can't forget Big Bill Wennington.  Now lets look at this years Heat team.  You have Wade (the best player on the floor in this years finals).  Chris Bosh, Chalmers, Bibby, Anthony, House, and Miller. The talent on this Miami team should have no problems beating any team in the NBA this year.  But somehow they can't come together.  I attribute this to a lack of team chemistry.  Yea ok I've seen the ESPN specials about how Wade and James run around all over Miami holding hands and singing kumbaya, but lets face it they don't get it done on the floor like they should.  Pippen and Jordan complimented each other.  The gospel on the Heat is the big 3 do NOT compliment each other like they should.  Last night when Wade went out King James should have taken over.  That wasn't what happened!  The Bulls team had chemistry because everyone knew their roles.  Jordan was gonna get you 40 plus every night.  Pippen took over when Jordan was winded or double or triple teamed, and everyone else was role players.  Yeah you had games when Kerr hit a big 3 or Kukoc had a good night but in the end you KNEW what you were going to get.
Next, I'd like to point out that Jordan took games over.  Remember the Cavs game when he stuck that shot in Ehlo's eye?  How about when he took the game over in Utah when he had the flu and basically collapsed afterwards?  Now tell me when Lebron did that?  THE MAN CAN'T CLOSE GAMES.  It's that simple.  Clutch time comes and he's not there.  Jordan always wanted the ball and James seems to shy from it at times.  Jordan didn't just take over games he took over whole playoffs.  In his prime with the Bulls the man had the whole league in the palm of his hands.  You want to know who i think the best closer is in this Finals series?  It's gotta be Dirk (the second best player on the floor in these Finals).  The guy has an innate ability to put his team on his back and carry his team across the finish line.
Finally, Jordan didn't have to tell you he was good.  HE WAS JUST THAT GOOD.  I understand that you must play with confidence.  Jordan exemplified that, but again you never saw Jordan up on a stage with smoke and lasers and you didn't see him grab a mic and say he was gonna win 6 NBA titles.  He just went out and did it.  Yeah when he was holding his trophy he may have held up his fingers counting the ones he had yet to win, but you knew the guy was going to do it.  I can't say that about Lebron because i don't think he's got it in him.  He hasn't proved it yet.
So, Lebron do what you want with your talents.  I really don't believe you're the chosen one at all.  He now owns the Charlotte Bobcats.

Shaq, Lenny Dykstra, Staney Cup Finals

First of all let me say the NBA really lost more than one of the most prolific big men of all time recently.  They quite possibly lost one of the funniest athletes to ever play any sport.  It was definitely refreshing to watch Shaq joke and horse around at his retirement party.  The man has been a breath of fresh air in a world of well lets say it primadonna's.  Yes he couldn't hit free throws, and yes he probably could have retired 3 or 4 years ago before he faded into mediocrity these last couple of years.  You can't help but forgive him for it.  The man has been an entertainer since his days of shattering backboards at LSU.  Thanks Shaq, its been a real pleasure watching you toy with the world in your oversized hands for 19 years.
Next is something not so pleasant, Lenny Dykstra.  WOW Len! Talk about the world crashing down on you.  You go from multi-millionaire to grand theft auto and drug charges.  Lets look at the bigger picture here... Was there anyone on those Mets teams that was a solid human being?  What a bunch of degenerates!  Mitch Williams told Mad Dog David D that Len Dykstra probably had the highest baseball IQ of anyone he ever played with.  Too bad that didn't extend to real life.  Yet another star in the tank... The trend in America is just not good with athletes now.  I know i shouldn't generalize athletes like this but here lately it seems like there is nothing positive coming out of the world of sports.  I remember watching Dykstra play when i was small coming up.  I didn't idolize him because i hated the Phillies, but come on man get it together.
Finally, I have to address my good friend Josh Lattime on the Mad Dog in the morning show.  Josh, i wholeheartedly agree that your coach is soft.  I understand you want him to come out with a cattle prod or some sort of barb-wire wrapped baseball bat that would make Terry Funk cringe, but the bottom line is he is NOT gonna sit his best players in the Stanley Cup Finals and the players must settle this on their own. If you don't want a soft hockey team you have to start laying the blame on the players.  They are the ones skating and handling business on the ice.  THEY HAVE TO STEP UP!  If somebody is gonna bite your boy, and Gary Bettman is gonna be the complete tool we all know him to be and not suspend him.  Take him out.  I mean lay the lumber North Carolina style.  Take him out back to the woodshed and handle it..... and Josh be happier man!  Id be stoked if one of my teams were in the finals...

Its Been Far Too Long...

I know i know, i have been away from blogging forever now and I'm sorry.  Now that life has calmed down a bit I'm gonna go back at it.  So much to talk about... So many issues... lets start with ummmm Tressel? Pryor? Tiger Woods? Nope ill start it off with the Tigers and Leyland.
Let me go ahead and put this on the table for everyone that has hated on Leyland.  The man has every right to smoke two packs of Lucky Strikes, mumble whatever he wants to mumble, and then look you in the eye and say STICK IT!  This Tigers team WILL and i will say it again WILL win the Central this year.  While i like the make up of the young Cleveland team, their epic collapse has already started!  This is the gospel on this particular subject, Detroit has a young team Dirks has been outstanding, Boesch has been fairly solid, and Cabrera may very well be the smartest hitter in the game today.  This combined with great starting pitching and a bullpen that has been much more dependable lately has this team charging in a way that would make Robert E Lee jealous.  The ONLY thing i can say that i do not agree with in the tigers lineup is the continued use of Raburn... I'm not a fan... sorry to inconsistent for me.  I have heard major sports talk radio announcers bash Leyland for a couple of years now and maybe just maybe its time to give him a little credit.  This team has some swagger.  Leyland's not the best manager in baseball... not at all... but give him a little praise... the teams playing good right now.  So don't burn his effigy in the town square just yet.
NOWWWWWW drum roll please... Tressel you have got to be kidding me... what an epic failure you are at life sir... First off how in the wide world of sports did THE OHIO STATE hire you first off... to whomever did that you get moron of the century.  I mean honestly how do you run Youngstown State in the ground first and then land of one the BIGGEST jobs in college athletics.  You reap what you sow.  Now the Buckeyes are the laughing stock of the sports universe.  You've got Playboy Pryor driving 350 z's with no license.  Players signing jerseys for sleeve tattoos.  You've get an athletic director with absolutely NO spine.  The topper is Tressel still texting his players Bible verses for "inspiration".  Pathetic.  I hope the NCAA buries the whole program for 5 years and they have trouble beating St Marys School of the Deaf and Blind.  MSU fans you have to be mad at this.  This gang of hooligans knocked you out of a Rose Bowl bid last year.  Sound off like you've got a pair.  Know this though before you do, your boy Dantonio knew this was going to come down.  As a matter of fact its almost for sure that he knew it was going down while he was there.  So even if he wasn't a colleague of Tressel, HE'S NOT GOING TO COMMENT!  He was there... he knew... the end... I don't need to hear Spurrier make a ridiculous comment about paying players 300 bucks a game out of coaches salaries, or Bob Knight saying the rule is stupid.  Or better yet mister scruples himself Nick Saban talking about Tressel like his long lost lover.  THEY ARE GUILTY!  Now let them twist in the wind where they belong.
Tiger Woods now is not playing in the US Open.  Now to be honest i could care less who wins.  I will watch just to see the course, and i will pray that someone like Fred Couples keeps my interest piqued for more than 30 minutes.  Tiger get it together man... even those who claim they hate you really need you.  The tour needs you to make golf successful and the PGA knows it.  Tell me honestly if it was Dustin Johnson and Rocco Mediate in a playoff this year at the open would you stop everything and watch it.  I know i wouldn't!
Next time for my friend Josh Lattime i will touch on the Stanley Cup Playoffs... enjoy this... I'm going to get off my soapbox and stop preaching now and enjoy the rest of the day... HAVE A GREAT DAY!
